During my apprenticeship I experienced both the best and worst of the residential construction industry. At best I saw homeowners receive quality results within their budget. At worst I saw builders cut corners to increase profitability and deliver short-term results under the facade of luxury. As an apprentice I often questioned why a conventional house requires so much maintenance after only 20-30 years? Why are structurally sound homes being demolished after one generation? Why, with all the knowledge and resources we have today is the warranty on a new home shorter than the warranty on a new car? Candidly asking these questions didn't always make me popular amongst conventional builders, but I did form strong relationships with a niche group in industry with similar views. Throughout my apprenticeship I worked on every step of new builds, renovations, old house restoration, timber and log buildings, and spent several weeks in Denmark watching and learning from the restoration of traditional half-timbered (Bindingsværk) buildings.
All this experience has lead me to the unique approach of our company, and I'm excited to continue to learn and develop with every project to deliver long lasting, sustainable homes for years to come.
It feels amazing to use your hands alongside your brain to solve problems. Carpentry has taught me to be creative at work in a non-traditional way. I was formerly a preschool storytime host in a public library which brought me joy, but I was missing something. Having a tangible product to be proud of and seeing results of my labour is extremely rewarding. Hearing from clients how my effort made them fall in love with their space again is fulfilling.
In 2020/21 Hugh and I bought and restored a house built in 1905. That project made me understand how underrated restoration is. Unfortunately, it is the belief of many that old houses should be torn down but there is beauty in fixing something that is broken. That house taught me the basics of carpentry, but it also taught me about valuing simplicity, integrity, and preservation. I am very proud of the final product we produced, and have been proud of our projects since.
It's important to me that our clients receive an end result that makes their home more comfortable, accessible, and sustainable.
